Welcome back to the Gran Turismo 7 Driver Academy, where we focus on honing your skills so you can compete at the top of the leaderboard. In this second episode, we will be delving into advanced cornering techniques, a critical skill for achieving high-speed lap times.

Our focus today is on the fundamental principle of weight transfer, which is key to navigating complicated corners. In previous lessons, we've discussed strategies like braking into a corner in a straight line, bleeding off the brakes, hitting the apex, and being patient at the apex to allow the car to rotate. But how do we handle a sequence like a right-hander going into a left-hander? This is where understanding weight transfer becomes vital.

Understanding Weight Transfer

Weight transfer refers to the shift of the vehicle's weight from one side to the other as it negotiates a turn. When you're turning right, for example, the car's weight builds up on the left-hand side due to inertia. If you're in a heavy car, like a Nissan Fair Lady, or a Group 3 or Group 4 vehicle, this weight shift can be significant.

As you build up this inertia on the left-hand side, if you immediately try to switch all that weight to the right-hand side to handle a quick left-hander, the car will struggle to cope. In this Fair Lady, you might lose the back end, and in other cars, you'd be forcing the car to defy the laws of physics.

Let the Car Settle

So, how do you handle a right into a left-hander? The answer lies in letting the car settle. This means allowing a brief pause after the first turn to let the weight distribution even out before you initiate the second turn. This approach is similar to the strategy we discussed for the Parabolica in the first episode, where a moment of patience can result in a faster exit.

When you allow the car to settle, you're effectively treating the sequence as two separate corners. This gives the car time to adjust and sets you up for a more controlled approach to the second corner.

Practical Application

Let's take a closer look at how this plays out on the track. As you turn into the right-hander, observe how the car pitches and the horizon line shifts as the weight transfers to the left side. As you come out of the turn and approach the left-hander, resist the urge to immediately steer left.

Instead, allow a brief pause, letting the steering wheel straighten slightly. This small gap gives the car time to settle, and then you can start steering gradually to the left. By doing so, you'll find that the traction you gain is astounding, allowing you to get on the throttle earlier and exit the corner faster.

In third person, you can clearly see how the car's weight shifts during this process. As you approach the left-hander, the car is evenly loaded and settled, ready to tackle the next turn with maximum grip and control.


Advanced cornering is all about understanding weight transfer and giving your car the time it needs to settle between turns. Although it may feel counterintuitive to pause, remember that going slower and being patient can often lead to faster lap times. Gran Turismo 7 excels at teaching this nuanced technique, and with practice, you'll see your own lap times start to fall.
